Deacon was standing in the tool shed, throwing tools out the door and onto the surrounding grass, when William found him.

“Where the fuck is the stupid flat-tipped shovel? How in the hell does anyone find anything in this freaking shed?”

“Deacon, do you have a minute?”

“Oh, hey, William. Sure, I got a minute. Here, hold this.” Deacon handed William a hoe then went back to digging though the shed.

Deacon was pretty sure William had not planned on doing yard work, but he figured whatever William needed to talk about could just as easily be talked about while doing yard work as it could be talked about sitting down.

“Put that in the wheelbarrow and follow me to the front. I got a garden to finish.”

Pushing a wheelbarrow, William followed Deacon to the front yard. Deacon was intent on finishing the sitting area near a willow. When Ben’s great-great-grandfather purchased this land for the pack, it was overgrown and unkempt. They cleared a section of it immediately and built the pack house where the alpha and his family lived. Through the years, many changes had been made to the land. When the government began taking an interest in preserving America’s nature, the small pack saw it as an opportunity to expand. They purchased more land in northwestern Kansas and started the Strays Preserve for studying wolves and relocating injured and misplaced animals.

Most pack members lived in the local town or the large neighboring city. A few lived directly on preserve land. The preserve required lots of volunteers and employees to monitor the half-million acres. Some pack, like William, lived at the house until they settled in the area or felt capable to live on their own. Others stayed at the house while they were single and worked closely with Ben as scouts, guards, or general underlings.

Each person in the pack filled some need and had a greater purpose. Deacon may not have been able to hammer a nail, but he was a wizard when it came to plants. After getting permission, he planted a vegetable garden in the backyard for supplying some of the pack’s needs. He marked trees to cut and started working on clearing the area, creating picnic spots and rest areas any member of the pack could enjoy. He had many more plans still in the works. Only Ben knew what Deacon planned, and everyone loved the surprise.

Today’s project was near the creek that ran along one side of the cleared property near the pack house. Deacon discovered a willow tree covered in brambles. He was creating a romantic landscape complete with a wooden bench for couples to relax. No one would ever believe Deacon was the romantic, based on his imposing frame and rough edges.

“Take the rake and start getting rid of all the leaves and twigs under the willow.”

Deacon turned over dirt for several minutes while silently watching William. He didn’t restart the conversation with William. Deacon figured if it were important, William would start talking on his own.
